The Strange Fate of Tiresias

According to the Greek myth told by Ovid, Tiresias was a man who, on his journey, came across a pair of snakes mating.  Disgusted by what he saw, Tiresias slew the creatures with a stick.  The goddess Hera, witnessing the event, was sorely displeased and, as a punishment, changed Tiresias into a woman.

I guess you can say Tiresias had a bad Hera day.

Anyway, when I heard this story, I just had to illustrate it.  In fact, it's one of two Greek-themed TGs dropping this month.

Special thanks to patron Madison Anderson, who introduced this tale to me.  Like Ovid, she's a weaver of tales and you can one of read her transformation tales on Amazon: Amazon.com: Threading the Loom: A study in identity. And cows. eBook: Anderson, Madison: Kindle Store

The fact that he got changed back always left a pang of sadness in my heart… Wait is that a point towards me being trans?!

Reynna Romero

Not quite--he was granted foresight AFTER being turned back into a man. Cassandra, though, is a similar character who is definitely a good metaphor for the way women were treated in ancient Greece.

So basically he got feminine intuition and yet because he was a woman, no one really cared what he thought. That's pretty typical Greek mythology punishment for you.

Mr. Domino

It's okay though, because he got the power of prophecy in return! Except that caused him even more suffering, because he could see the horrible consequences of actions before they happened yet had no success in persuading people to stop...

Yeah, the sad thing about Tiresias is, that Hera blinded Tiresias later and got changed back into a man.

stger

Yeah, and seven years later, she made him go blind because he said that being a woman was better.
