The fact that Nojiko and Coco village don't know what Nami was doing in the live action is the only thing I don't like about this adaption. In the anime and manga its explained that they knew but they never let Nami know so that she wouldn't feel obligated to follow through.

EDIT: Garp wasn't a pirate. He's always been a marine. When he talks to Koby in episode 5, he says he joined the marines 50 years ago as a green recruit much like Koby himself. By "glory days" Zeff was referring to their era.
I love those lines of dialogue where Zeff compares the new generation to the Micqueot wine "perfectly aged, ready to be enjoyed. leave it too long and it'll go bad." but Garp responds with "Or you could just serve whiskey", which gets better with age.
