2023-08-08 07:19:28 +0000 UTCSnake is based off of a cool story i found on vinland saga reddit i will quote it here: "In the 1940s, a Swedish author named Frans G Bengtsson wrote a book called "Röde Orm"(Red Snake) which in English became known as "The Long Ships". It details the story of a young man who ends up on a viking expedition basically by accident (A bunch of vikings tried to steal his family's sheep, he chased after and killed one of them, and the others captured him and said "since you took a rower from us, you either take his place or we dump you in the sea") He is named "Orm" but becomes called "Röde Orm" because of his red hair. Orm goes along with the vikings down to modern Spain and via various adventures become a bodyguard to the Caliph of Cordoba for a while. In service to this man, he is given a curved sword he names "Blåtunga"(Blue Tongue), and when he comes home he's a well-travelled, badass warrior with the favour of kings and a tonne of stories. I've not seen others note this (I searched for mentions of it), but I'm convinced Snake is a reference to this book. He's travelled far south, served as a bodyguard to a ruler, been given a curved sword and now has come home to a simpler life back in his homeland. The change to him serving in Byzantium makes sense historically, but his sword remains a scimitar, and my bet is that this is why." Also some of my own finds: Snake is a Varangian guard who served the emperor. He is a Dane as his name, Roalds Grimmsonn, is danish. His sword SnakesTongue (very close to Rode Orms Blue tongue) is called a paramerion and was used in the varangian guard. He can read greek as bibles at the time were not translated into norse.

Fun fact: This actually happened in real life. King cnut released his troops from england and they started to trust him, also his speech about the waves happened in real life. Yukimura is one of the best writers in manga because he created this amazing fictional story but still tied in a lot of real events
