It seems fitting that episode 89 of Segaiden tackles Sega's most significant game release for ’89. I didn't plan it that way, mind you. The universe just loves me, if only in small, meaningless ways. Case in point: I woke up this morning to discover I'd won 20 bucks in the lottery. That doesn't change my life, but $20 is still [checks] a coffee and pastry at the airport when I head up to Long Island Retro Expo this weekend. (Come see me talk about games this weekend if you're in the area!)
I'm very happy with the Genesis episodes so far, and with the upcoming scripts I've already penned. I realize that putting nearly 90 episodes of retrospectives together to get to this point in Segaiden amounts to one hell of a shaggy dog story, buuuut seeing Genesis in this context better impresses on viewers (I hope!) the eye-popping impact the console had when it launched. It's easy to look back on the Genesis launch lineup and wave it off as a load of insubstantial fluff, which isn't wrong, but back in 1989? It was hard to believe you could see shit like this on your very own personal (or very own family) television. No coins, no tricks, just giant dudes turning even gianter and then becoming meteor-like were-warriors. Unbelievable stuff back then, seriously.
