February bonus #3: The King of Fighters R-1 [Game Boy Works Gaiden/NGP]

This has been one of the most taxing and time-intensive "side" videos I've put together to date. But, you know, it had to be. Not only did I need to do justice to The King of Fighters R-1 and its place in portable gaming history, I also needed to put its place in fighting game history into perspective as well. Which meant a big ol' sidebar on The King of Fighters as a whole. But, here it is... a video years in the making.

Yeah, sadly, that resulted in Super Turbo (which was far more interesting) being really hard to find. I think I only played it once in an arcade on vacation until the collection came out on PS1 several years later. Capcom should skipped Super and gone strait to Super Turbo.

I wouldn't feel too bad, nobody liked Super SF2 in the arcades to my recollection

Ha, no worries! I was one of those suckers who was genuinely excited when I saw Super in the arcade. I think I only ever saw Super Turbo once though.

I stand corrected. You know, I only saw the arcade version of Super Street Fighter II once, and I couldn't muster up any enthusiasm for the fourth of fifth iteration of the same game I'd been playing for three years and didn't bother to play it. I've only ever played the Super NES version!

Great video! Love the retrospective on SNK. One minor correction- surprisingly, Super Street Fighter 2 actually SLOWED DOWN the gameplay. Previously, Turbo sped it up and the arcade SSF2 took it back to WW and CE speeds. It wasn’t until the home ports that you had the option to choose turbo speeds again. It never made any sense anyway.

AWRIGHT!!!
