Segaiden 72: Miracle Warriors & Argos no Juujiken (Rygar)

Wow, gosh. This episode brings 1988 to an end for Master System. Well... mostly. I do want to cover the handful of Japan-exclusive titles that showed up between March and September 1988. Hardly anything to speak of, really, but I'm gonna do it anyway.

I'm sure I will hear from people who really loved Miracle Warriors after this episode goes live. Cut their teeth on it, in fact. I know they've got to exist, somewhere, but man... it's a tough game to love now, and I have to imagine that it was downright baffling to kids who had never touched a menu-driven game before Miracle Warriors, let alone one that offered absolutely zero quarter. Bless anyone who experienced this in their pupal form and still came away enthusiastic about gaming. You are made of truly stern stuff.

The character sprites from The Black Onyx make me laugh every time

I did experience this, after playing Phantasy Star. Sure, PS was obviously the crown jewel but I was hooked on the genre after that and I know I enjoyed Miracle Warriors. The map helped a lot, and graph paper and pencil were at hand for the dungeons. I'm not sure I'd have the patience for it now, but at the time I was happy to have it.

I played Phantasy Star for the first time a couple years ago, and you're not kidding, it really is that good. My wife kept getting caught as she walked through the room just from the music being so 🔥.
