January bonus #3: Seta Game Works Scene One 4K VHS rip

Sorry, it's a spicy one this time. Atypically so. Hence the age-gating—you'll have to click through to YouTube if you want to see this tremendously naughty video.

The thing is, though, I didn't realize it would be quite so naughty. You never know with these old import game VHS tapes. They usually are totally safe to watch with your kids and parents (assuming your kids and parents are really into gameplay footage of old games narrated in Japanese), but then suddenly and without content warnings... boobs.

Such is the case here with the nebulously named Sega Game Works Scene One tape. I picked it up for the Twin Eagle: Revenge Joe's Brother Footage because I wanted B-roll for the upcoming Twin Eagle NES Works video (and also because "Revenge Joe's Brother" is one of the finest subtitles ever) and didn't think much of the Super Real Mahjong inclusion on the flip side of the case.

Well, the Twin Eagle segment is even better than I expected—it's just a nonstop drone of electric guitars and helicopter-based explosions, as you'd want from an arcade game. But the Super Real Mahjong portion turns out to be simply a showcase of the girls' introductions and strip scenes from a couple of computer mahjong games. The animations are impressive and start out pretty cute, but after a while you get the impression that the girls are humiliated and upset by the outcomes, which is tough to watch. There's nothing horrible here, but it does feel uncomfortable. Anyway... I'm uploading it here because the Twin Eagle material will come in handy and it feels weird to impose censorship on an archival piece, but I don't think I'll be setting this one live to my channel. And, lesson learned: cute girls on a mahjong tape is probably gonna result in an age gate.

In happier news, I expect to have the next Neo Geo Pocket retrospective video up by the end of the month. And it will NOT require an age gate. Because it is not boy.

Comments

There are plenty of video game mahjong adaptations based on two- and even three-player setups... I feel like I've covered thousands of them here through the years.

The question I'm coming away with here is "what variant of mahjong is being played in that game?". I've only ever played with four player rulesets.

For the longest time, I thought it was about the brother of a guy called Revenge Joe. Knowing the truth makes more sense, but Revenge Joe is a pretty cool comic book character name.

You know, I remember seeing the title and being confused at the arcade for Revenge Joe's Brother. It's good to finally have context. I don't be just going out and revenging for no reason.
