NES Works 140: Castlequest & The Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle

Last week we had Defender of the Crown, where you invaded and defended castles; now here are two more games where you invade castles. Well, you definitely do in the case of Castlequest. The Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle, I dunno. Nothing about that reads as "castle" to me, especially when you get to the wood panel rooms and the frozen pipe zones. Then again, what do I know? I'm clearly not as smart as Kemco-Seika, who cleverly came up with a game concept so generic that they could recycle it for any character license they chose to.

An ominous, foreboding first appearance of Hugo in the Works series

One wonders who play tested Castlequest and thought, "yes, this will do well against the other NES titles in 1989". Shame, seems like a great concept, meh execution. I do recall beating Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle as a kid, that 2 day rental felt like an eternity.

Now I've got the idea for a ROM hacking contest where you have to insert another licensed franchise into a Crazy Castle game, like He-Man or Popeye or something

In fairness, that sort of thing looks a bit less awful on a real GBA screen, but still. Barf!!

Castlequest, aka that game in my nightmares with the one looping music track from hell. It was certainly a rental from back in the day.

Yeesh I had never actually seen Crazy Castle 5 before, that is some bottom-tier GBA jank for sure

It doesn't cover gameplay, but this is my favorite video about the Crazy Castle IP saga: https://youtu.be/iR9_Z8iBCu4?si=MlRXMvR9ZhmRTkEX
