Segaiden #41: Space Harrier & Great Baseball

Well, geez. Look at these games. Then, look at them side-by-side with what was happening on NES in early 1987—Pro Wrestling, Track & Field, BurgerTime. Fine games on NES, but this duo on Master System feels practically next generation by comparison. I find myself increasingly impressed by Sega's output in the 8-bit era the longer I soak in Segaiden. Of course, in a chronological context, Nintendo is about to take a rocket-powered leap forward while Sega will continue chugging along at the same steady clip we've seen so far. But as of March ’87, it's honestly a wonder that Master System didn't sell way better in the U.S.

I LOVED Championship Baseball on the Apple II as a kid.

Eight year old me didn't even know that there was an arcade version of Space Harrier when my dad bought the SMS version for me. I was totally blown away by it and that game was pretty much my life for a month. It became my everything and I started drawing my own Space Harrier "Levels" in my school notebooks even. Goddamn I love that game.
