NES Works Gaiden #040: Donkey Kong / Donkey Kong Junior / Mario Bros. / Centipede

Hmm, these games look somehow familiar...

Yes, we've reached the weird speed bump in console history. The time Atari released a handful of late-era cartridges for its 8-bit platforms that all hailed from Nintendo, despite Nintendo having ascended to market dominance in Japan and North America by that point and wanting to cede zero territory to competitors. What shenanigans could possibly explain this? I did not come across any definitive statements about the provenance of these games while researching this episode, and therefore I spend most of its running length speculating idly.

Also this week: A belated look at Centipede, which accidentally ties this episode to last week's mentioned of Millipede for NES. This cart is way better, though.

Centipede on the 7800 also had a competitive mode for two players, where you could shoot each other. My dad and I had a lot of fun with that, back in the day XD

Glad you've enjoyed them! I'm going to be putting together a few overviews on post-crash Atari 8-bit releases beyond the 7800 as well—currently I'm trying to track down a few final XEGS releases, but they're pretty hard to come by.

I recently purchased a 7800, consequently my first Atari console. Looking forward to this episode as I really enjoyed the previous episodes on the 7800 in the series. The alternate 8bit timeline the console offers a window into is so fascinating.
