Game Boy World #065: The "Amazing" Spider-Man

Alas, I didn't quite make my self-imposed February deadline for this one, but uh... welcome to March!? I'm sorry the month had to begin like this. Anyway, it's time to reorient my brain and start writing about NES games. Should be fun, I hope.

And I want to take a moment to say thank you to everyone who continues to back these video projects — I really appreciate the support, and I hope my work lives up to your expectations... even if games like Amazing Spider-Man don't.

Game Boy World #065: The "Amazing" Spider-Man

Now Spider-Man 2 was a game that I felt was awful. Mostly because it was inscrutable. And it was too non-mainstream for Nintendo Power or other such magazines to cover it. Now in the days of FAQs at your fingertips, it might actually be doable.

I was one of those kids who beat this game through sheer determination - I think I was out of school that day because I'd had oral surgery. Maybe it's Stockholm Syndrome or maybe I was just that much of a Spider-Man fan, but I didn't find the game nearly as bad as you make it out to be. Sure, it was a sub-par platformer, but if you learned its rules then it was at least fair. The strategies you developed early on would continue to serve you well as you advanced with some slight adjustments for new foes. As a kid, I could usually get up to Doctor Octopus (and for some reason thought he was the final boss), but found him really hard to beat. And then that day at home, I did beat him only to discover the final level with Venom. I also remember being really impressed at the size of Spider-Man's sprite.

I was given this for Christmas at the time, only game I could play besides Tetris for almost 6 months. I don't think I ever got past the subway section it was truly terrible.

'It's Game Boy World, and this is a dumpster fire!' I laughed out loud.

I fully support taking shots at ANTICIPATION, one of the strangest bad games I ever bought.

*shudder* Of course, I got this game for Christmas 1990 (along with Wizards and Warriors X.) You'd figure I'd get the hint after asking for Back to the Future for Christmas 1989! At least with the NES Advantage and the slow-motion option, that game was capable of completion for me.

No, thank you Jeremy for continuing this crazy, brilliant, mostly insane, and simply excellent project. Again, thank you Jeremy, enjoy your break. I'll be waiting patiently for the return of GBW and the release of the book come May/June. I will hang around and hope for some excellent NES games and Lynx retrospectives!!
