Another milestone

A while back I ordered a modded Atari Lynx with a video-out connection from a random German on the Internet and hoped for the best. It has arrived, and I finally gotten it set up for capture. This test run isn't perfect, but I'm just kind of stunned I was able to make it happen at all. Until a couple of months ago, the only known Lynx video-out hack had been an S-video setup done by some French dude who had vanished from the Internet. I guess now I can follow through on those Lynx retrospectives, huh?

Guess my videos will be without high quality Lynx footage for a while, then. That's not a terrible price, but a bit too rich for my blood.

For the system, an LED screen mod, the video-out mod, and expedited shipping from Europe, it came to 250 euros. Expensive, but not unreasonable. It helps that the dollar is at its strongest against the euro right now—it would have cost about $60 more a couple of years ago!

I have to ask: how much did the mod cost?

Joe Drilling

Awesome! I remember I was at G-Unit records and the A&R brings out a room control device and I go "Wow...that looks just like a Lynx." He says, "Word? You know about the Lynx?!" and I think from that exchange he's gonna get 50 cent to buy my tracks and I'll be rich... Alas, they didn't, but I'll always have that! Lol...Can't wait to see what you come up with.

Thanks for the test footage! It looks great and makes me wish other portable systems had video-out options. Neo Geo Pocket comes to mind as a great option if it looks as good as this mod.

"One project at a time"—yeah, I know. I felt like I had to jump on this when I learned about it a couple of months ago, because I can't be sure how long the modder dude will offer his services.

Good games on the Lynx!?!?!??! There are a lot of pretty excellent games, a fair share of duds, but some really fantastic arcade ports and original gems. Some of my favorites include; California Games, Checkered Flag, Chip's Challenge, Ms. Pac-Man, Paperboy, Rampart, S.T.U.N. Runner, Shanghai, Rygar, Todd's Adventures in Slime World, and Warbirds. Some of these following titles are games I don't own (yet) and have heard good things about, Xybots, Scrapyard Dog, Awesome Golf, Hockey, BattleWheels, Battlezone 2000, Joust, Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom, Ninja Gaiden, Qix, Robotron: 2084 and that is about it. Now, sadly, the Lynx has a fairly small library (about 70 games, compared to about 300-400 for the Sega Game Gear and 1000+ for the Gameboy) so those games I listed, that is really about it sadly, for fairly high tiered games. There is probably about 15-20, lower Tier 2 or so games, so in reality, the Lynx isn't that bad!

Wowza. That is a very, very impressive mod on the Lynx! The colors look pretty accurate (a little darker, but that could just be Blue Lighting) and above all, the sprites aren't stretched, very nice! I've heard a few things about the S-Video out that you mentioned, over on Atari Age, curious that the guy who made it disappeared...Still, one project at a time Jeremy! (although I can't help, but wait with baited breath for some more Lynx retrospectives, the Lynx is easily one of my favorite handhelds!)

Jennifer Cheeseman

That's pretty great. On the other hand... Is there anything good on the Lynx?
