Game Boy World #053: Mercenary Force

This game is cool! I am really terrible at it! Anyway, it's a nice change of pace from the endless procession of puzzlers. And how great is that cover? (So great.)

Did I miss something or didn't you explain the super move of each character that sacrifices it for a huge gain?

Niels Kobschätzki

That's a fair point. Having not played the game myself, I'll take your word as to how it feels. It still LOOKS cramped and somewhat frustrating, like you're taking hits in an unavoidable fashion, but that may not be how it works when actually playing.

Aaron Schafer

That's true BUT the game is designed around that impediment, turning it into a deliberate design element rather than an OH WELL frustration.

Oh, and love the KMFDM reference at the end, also.

Whoops. Sorry about the double post. I didn't realise the enter key would post a comment, rather than just start a new line. Weird. Anyway, I was planning on saying I have to admit, the second I saw the start of this game, I thought of King's Knight, that Squaresoft before they were Squaresoft disaster for the NES, but this actually has far more going for it than that piece of trash. I do have to say, though, this game looks as if it runs up against one of the same issues that comes up again and again in Game Boy games, in that the characters (in this case, the group of four, rather than a single sprite), just takes up so much of the screen that it's very difficult to maneuver and avoid enemy fire. Cool to see it mostly doesn't adversely affect the gameplay, but you're still looking at a full party of characters taking up something like ~10% of the screen's real estate at all times.

Wow, this game looks really cool. I never owned a Game Boy, and seeing all these strange, occasionally brilliant, occasionally half-formed ideas that populated the system is really fascinating.

The Japan release was on my 7th birthday for anyone who wanted to know.

This was actually one of the first Game Boy games I had ever played. I really want to go back and play it, now!
