Boston Dynamics Atlas humanoid robot goes electric
Added 2024-04-17 13:43:58 +0000 UTCBoston Dynamics has introduced an all-electric version of its Atlas humanoid robot. This new iteration marks a significant departure from the hydraulic systems of its predecessors, offering a quieter operation with the whirring of electric motors. The design of the robot has been significantly overhauled, featuring a more streamlined and cable-free appearance, resembling a softer, more cartoonish figure compared to the previous models.
The electric Atlas demonstrates improved fluidity in movement, though still with a hint of jerkiness, reminiscent of the confident gait of its quadruped cousin, Spot. The robot’s head features a ring light around a round screen, and it can perform complex movements like standing up from a prone position and walking away from the camera.
Boston Dynamics has retained the name “Atlas” for this model, despite its tradition of renaming research robots for commercial release. The company’s CEO, Robert Playter, suggests that the name may be revisited as the project progresses towards mass production.
This new Atlas represents Boston Dynamics’ ongoing efforts to refine humanoid robotics, moving away from the more intimidating designs of the past to a friendlier, more approachable aesthetic. The robot’s capabilities and potential applications continue to evolve, showcasing the company’s commitment to innovation in the field of robotics.
