Happy Friday! In this week's video, we start the trip up the ICW to bring Athena from Cape Canaveral to Oriental, NC. Yes, we finally managed to touch ground with Athena's keel 🙄 Luckily, it was soft mud, and there should be no damage. Remember the saying: There are two types of sailors - those who have run aground and those who lie about it 😉
In real-time news, we should have made it to Oriental, NC by the time you read this. It's going to be a crazy mess or hectic activity when we get there, so I wanted to schedule this post a little bit ahead of time :) Hopefully, we'll have time to post a Patreon live update video. We need to pack everything we'll need from Athena (clothes, tools, and food) before driving back down to Florida. The clock is ticking if we want to get the catamaran moved to Oriental before Ava needs to go back to London on July 1st.

Check out the boat shed, and work shop at the end of Tiller Ext street in Whortonsville. At one time I think it was for sale.

2025-05-12 18:15:21 +0000 UTCI was stationed at MCAS Cherry Point for 12 years and lived in downtown New Bern at the corner of Craven and New St. for most of that. It is a sailor's paradise, in my opinion, and a great place to settle. It is at least twice the size now as it was in 1971, but it isn't big enough to be "crowded" and has a lot of amenities for convenience. When I tried to retire there in '87 I couldn't afford waterfront property way back then. It has to be 4 times as much now. Be sure to take the tour of Tryon Palace at Christmastime. New Bern was the Provincial Capital of the Carolinas in the 1700s before it split into North & South. Governor Tryon made New Bern his home and it's been preserved. Ava will be perfect and in her element giving us all a tour of it. All those large creeks off Pamlico Sound are open to the Atlantic through cuts in the Outer Banks and in the past have been a haven for smugglers from Blackbeard's time to the present. They are just smuggling different contraband today.
