The Future of Medications for Schizophrenia | with Pharmacist Matthew Elswood

Unfortunately the situation is a lot less rosy than Lauren and Matthew make out. So no new drug treatments for schizophrenia for the next 5 years. Why is this? It is all about money. Sufferers of psychosis tend not to be wealthy people who can afford to pay for expensive drugs. The business aim of Big Pharms is not helping the poor schizophrenic but to maximize shareholder value and return on capital. This is what is printed in the annual reports of companies such as Johnson and Johnson. Psychiatrists have been using the same family of drugs ( typical and atypical antipsychotics ) for the last 70 years. For financial reasons Big Pharma is not investing in treatments for psychosis in the same way as for cancer medication. The Pharma companies instead just continue to modify the existing drugs often with disasterous consequences for the patients.( Invega/Sustena for example ) COMMON side effects of antipsychotics may include, but are not limited to: Gynecomastia and galactorrhea; Drowsiness, lightheadedness, dizziness, weight gain; Muscle spasms, restlessness, fever, sore throat, irregular heartbeat, seizures; Uncontrollable muscle movements in the face, lips, tongue, mouth, arms or legs (tardive dyskinesia condition) Neuroleptic malignant syndrome Johnson & Johnson deliberately withheld information regarding their drug Invega/Sustena from the FDA. The jury also found that J&J intentionally falsified, concealed, or destroyed material evidence. The court ordered J&J to pay $76.6 million to the patient. https://www.arnolditkin.com/our-victories/-76-6-million-risperdal-verdict/
