Another great video and as always great work Rob and Lauren and I thought Aubrey was brilliant. For me what it really got across was clearly the early intervention model is critical and the physiological ‘broken leg’ metaphor is one I regularly use when supporting colleagues who experience mental health issues - I often ask if you broke your arm what would you do? So please do the same with your mental health and as your employer I’m with you so tell me what you need from me and I’ll do everything I can.
Living in the UK we have the NHS which I dont know internationally it’s viewed but it is frankly awful in the main with mental health. Yes there are good people dotted around but in the main are shockingly awful. To use the physiological metaphor here’s the comparison.
Leg is broken - first step the GP might give you a sticking plaster (band aid) and send you on your way.
Leg gets worse - GP tells you to keep trying with the sticking plaster. Might add one more.
Leg leads to long term sickness eg work - GP may think about sending you to casualty, maybe not - total luck of the draw.
Leg leads to loss of employment / relationship - GP sends you to casualty with a 12 month waiting list.
Leg either stablises and causes long term suffering till casualty see you in 12 months.
Leg becomes gangrenous - admitted under section (reverting to the mental health sense).
Clearly this is a soapbox issue for me as I’m very passionate about this but it’s so frustrating for people to experience. The even more disgraceful thing here is the public awareness as the need to seek help is well publicised - but if you do seek help our NHS doesn’t fund the services you need and are generally pretty useless when you try.
With covid-19 it’s even worse, if you have a cough you get instant treatment. Meanwhile those who are suffering with mental health issues have seen appointments cancelled. We’re seeing suicides increase as a consequence and still the doctors aren’t interested. The NHS and our department of health is a disgrace here. I only hope that over in Canada you have a better service and that people like Aubrey are the norm and not the exception.
Anyway rant over - I’ll get off my soapbox now 😁 and wish you both good health!
