I love to hear that you really like this show! And your friend having all of that background and he signs off on it as well is awesome. I think it is wonderful! I agree the writing with Sauron is SO GOOD! I love how they are doing everything, it just feels right.

Wow, you just zoomed right through this season so far. I, personally, really love this show. I have not read the novels (nor appendices that this show is based on), so I am a fan from the movies and the animated representations of The Lord of the Rings when I was younger. My co-worker is a HUGE Tolkien guy whose read all the novels and appendices and he reread the appendices while watching this show. He didn't watch the show until this season because he started the 1st season and stopped before the end of the 1st episode because, he said, that he was expecting it to be more about the novels and he, like a lot of critics, looked at this as fan-fiction, but when I told him that it's not based on the novels, but on the appendices, that's when he reread them and he said that the show follows those almost exactly and just fills out the narrative. Now, he's so into it and he's always ahead of me in watching the episodes (even though he prefers to wait until a season is over and binge). He said that he actually teared up at the end of the first episode with Tom Bombadil, when he heard the song at the end. The first season was getting us to know the players in the game and setting up the situation. Now the situation is in play and we get to see how these characters we were introduced to react to it. I really appreciate how they show just how much of a master manipulator/gaslighter Sauron is. Even though we know how things turn out, we don't know HOW exactly things get to that point. It's not simple to see the path that leads to Sauron. Everyone thinks they are fighting against him, but you cut to him and he gets a sly smile and I'm like, "Oh man! That's exactly what he wanted! DAMMIT!" 😁 Point is, I appreciate that they don't make the other characters seem stupid in order to make him seem smarter. One of the biggest examples of knowing the outcome, but not how it got there is with Numenor. We know what happens (generally speaking) and the queen even SAW it in the palantir and she's trying to prevent it but the path is unclear. It's not like, "Well, OBVIOUSLY, she should do this in order to prevent it." I'm like, "I don't know what I'd do and I'd be second guessing myself the whole time."
