The game has spores that you could get infected with, along with a bite from an infected person. They took the spores out of the TV show 'cause they did research with fungal specialists that said that if these types of controlling fungi had spores that could infect you, that everyone would be infected really quickly and there'd be no uninfected after 20 years, so they changed that for the TV show. Not gonna spoil for anything in the future, the show follows the game very closely, but they did change some stuff (mostly for the better, IMO) by adding more character stuff and the flashback at the beginning with the scientists. That wasn't in the game and I thought it was great and SO creepy. There were no flashbacks in the game. They also followed Sarah around here for her last day. They didn't really do that in the game. It was mostly from her POV in the beginning also, but they didn't show her fixing breakfast, going to school or going into the city to get the watch fixed, they just show her giving it to Joel. I thought it was a great touch to show all that for people who hadn't played the game 'cause it gives the illusion that she is the main character we'd be following. There's a lot of gameplay they left out 'cause it's mostly fighting stuff, but they stuck very closely with the story and it's a very story-driven game. Most of the dialogue (except for the added stuff, obviously) is close to word-for-word from the game. I didn't play the game until long after it'd been out and remastered.

And yes, this IS a heavy show, made from a heavy game. Not spoiling, just letting you know, this isn't a light show.

The video game studio was very involved in the production. Yep that was the actress from Mindhunter. She was also an FBI agent in Fringe which was a great show of the mid 2000s. Also yeah the doctor was in the Mummy. Ellie guessed that 1980's music on the radio meant trouble. The song that played was Depeche Mode "Never Let Me Down Again". So it means trouble.
