The Expanse 5x9 & 5x10 Full Reaction

So this season of The Expanse was amazing. I was so immersed in the story between Filip and Marco and Naomi that I forgot the whole ppint of the show was about the protomolecule lol. I was shattered in episode 10, couldn't stop the tears from flowing. I cant believe how great this series is! And now we are unto season 6

The Expanse 5x9 & 5x10 Full Reaction

Comments

I always thought that people gave Oksana more crap than she deserved. I completely understand where she was coming from in that she was trying to protect Drummer's whole faction by keeping Drummer from being impulsive (understandably so) and reckless and getting the whole faction killed. If Drummer went rogue and separated from the faction, Marco would still kill them all as an example. I honestly don't blame her for her actions at ALL. She's not bad, she doesn't have ill intent for anyone. She's really just trying to keep them all alive, even though I'm on Drummer's side. I want Drummer to kill that woman and go after Naomi 'cause we know Naomi and love her, but we don't know Drummer's new family so it's easier for us to disregard them in favor of helping Naomi, but I don't dislike Oksana nor do I think she's shady or betraying anyone. They were put in a shit position because of Marco and I blame him completely.

Late but oh boy, Naomi's jumps into the great void of space are some of the best moments in media imo. Equal to the most epic moments in the biggest of blockbusters. Don't think I breath when she jumped until after Bobbie was with her heading to the Razorback. Alex's death was the best they could, and fits well enough. And Holden's faces are just perfect throughout the series. Oh and fuck Marco.

I'm Excited for your season 6 reactions

I made this same comment on the E10 reaction! Its all about us.

I am a big fan of Josep in the books and I really liked his character here on the show as well. But I agree, they made it very suspenseful but I was pretty confident Josep was doing the right thing. Not a fan of Oksana here either...

Someone above commented about this, but I am going to second that comment. There's a very good video on Youtube by Spacedock that breaks down the battle between the Roci and the Belter/Drummer fleet. You can find if you search for "The Expanse: The Best Space Battle Ever?" I just re-watched it and it doesn't have any spoilers for Season 6. There's so much more going on in this battle than one realizes during a first watch.

I forget whether you knew this or not, but Cas Anvar (Alex) was fired from the show after an investigation into him regarding sexual misconduct. They had to film an extra scene or two and he is edited out of the final scene with all of them celebrating. If you pay attention, you can see where he was supposed to be sitting. But yeah, that's why his death is oddly placed.

I sobbed just as hard if not with during Naomi's ordeal the first time around. I was inconsolable. Last episode was among my FAVORITES. One of the best one shots I've ever seen. This season was 🔥 and it's been so special watching with you 💓

I agree Tony, I think the show runners were trying to keep it as surprising as possible. Especially the camera angle were they show the Serrio Mal and it looks almost identical to the Roci as it shoots the torpedos. I think when I watched this originally I thought Josep was doing the right thing just because Oksana was trying to stop him, and I was not a fan of Oksana, so I was thinking if Oksana is trying to stop him in the battle than he's probably helping Drummer and doing something good.

I've watched that battle scene probably a dozen or more times, and I *still* can't tell that the ship Josep fired at wasn't the Roci. I've actually come to think that maybe that was intentional. They deliberately have him say something vague when asked what he's doing, and we watch the PDCs of a Martian ship trying to shoot the torpedoes down, but I think maybe they wanted us to question for a moment who was being blown up and to get nervous. Only when we cut to the interior of the Rocinante and see the other ship blowing up in the display screen do we know for sure what happened. I think it was sort of a trick they used to play with us a little, and yeah, it definitely worked!

It was great sharing this experience with you Imon, these episodes were so good. The part where Naomi says "Alex you brave idiot" and then later says, "I'm sorry I called you an idiot Alex" is so tough to watch. Those were almost her last words. Minor correction, the Martians who helped Marco at the end broke away from Mars, they are essentially Martian separatists, the Mars government had no idea this was happening. Most of the Martian traitor ships were labeled as "lost in battle" with Inaros's forces. On paper the Martians would say the ships were destroyed in battle, but in reality they transferred many of these ships to Marco in secret. They broke away from Mars because they thought Mars had lost its way. They wanted to be "pure" and "more Martian than Martian," that's the way Admiral Sauveterre phrases it at the end. And then he get's killed by something. The space battle scene gets confusing when Joseph fires all the torpedos, we don't know who he's firing them at. Turns out he's helping Drummer and fires them at the Serrio Mal, but the Serrio Mal looks a lot like the Roci, so many reactors get confused at this and think he's firing at the Roci. Honestly the Serrio Mal is just a bigger fatter and more blocky Rocinante, they do look very similar. Here's a good play by play breakdown of the battle, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1AEHK8oQeA&t=2s At the end the torpedo the Roci fired was to blow up the Chetzemoka, cause of the bad memories for Naomi and the fact the ship would be a danger to anyone who got close to it. I hope that clears some stuff up.

Regarding the man/woman thing: The authors and show runner have said that the fact that it was women who first resigned was more coincidence than an attempt to show that women are more reasonable and less prone to warmongering. It was actually the civilians in that room that resigned, whereas the military people stayed. And three of the civilians were women, whereas the military leaders were more male. But that aside, I think you'd have to be blind to argue that women and men are exactly the same in this respect. Of course there will be militaristic women and pacifist, empathic men, but these just aren't the values that we are taught growing up, and some of it is biological and hormonal as well (testosterone breeds aggression, after all). So on the whole, I think you're right to assert that more women in power generally leads to less conflict, at least in broad terms. The irony here is that when Paster talks about being ruled by logic instead of emotions, he is in fact the one falling prey to his emotions. It just that those emotions are anger and fear, and a desire for retribution (which technically isn't an emotion, but it's definitely a response to emotion). In truth, both sides of the table were being affected by emotions, it's just a matter of which emotions they were listening to. I agree regarding Filip. On one hand, terrorists should not get a pass just because they've been fed misinformation or hateful rhetoric. But I think you have to make some allowances for maturity here too. Filip only knows what he was raised to believe, and he's still a bit too young to engage in the critical thinking needed to question those beliefs. We can only hope he learns as he grows. But he's not off to a very good start, unfortunately.

It's actually funny that you would say that the character stuff made you forget that the whole point of the show is about the protomolecule. A number of people, including (I think) the authors themselves, would say the story really isn't about the protomolecule. The protomolecule is sort of a literary "MacGuffin" here, or, at best, a catalyst that drives the very human stories that are central to the show, and most of the source books as well. Arguably, the 9th (last) book in the series deals a little more directly with the protomolecule story, or at least the story of the beings that created it and the other beings that opposed them. But the majority of the story is about human beings and the best and worst attributes of humanity, and how they're both brought out by our exposure to this powerful alien technology. You reacted exactly as most of the rest of us did, and as was intended by the writers and producers. So good job! 😊

Tony Camas

I got really emotional again with you and wanted to say thank you for letting us watch and experience together with you! <3
