The Expanse 1x5 & 1x6 Full Reaction!

Comments

You're picking up on a lot of the breadcrumbs the show's sprinkling in, you definitely have an eye for detail! Episode 5 does a good job at showing how belters are treated when at the mercy of Earth/Mars corporations. Too greedy to ensure safe living conditions, so the station's blown up to try and cover it up and push a chilling effect against future protests. Air rationed, water rationed, healthcare withheld, indentured servitude...why would those Earth corps give up a captive workforce that by nature of not having homes of their own, of depending on the corp to survive, there's no leverage? It's a direct comparison to the mining tragedies across the world, where 'company towns' existed that paid workers in their own company currencies so they couldn't get their food, their shelter, their goods, etc. elsewhere, and they'd often rope people into housing 'deals' that would lock them into debt and enforce indentured servitude until they paid their debts (that accrued significant compounded interest, typically) off. But in this show, you can't just go on the run and travel by foot to the nearest settlement. you're in space, in a vacuum, there's real no way out. And that's what Anderson Dawes is talking about, wanting Ceres to be run independently by belters, so they'd have a home of their own, without Earth or Mars calling the shots. He's clearly a bit of a snake, and clearly ruthless, but his intentions are noble enough in the end. Wuthout independence, without a home of their own, they'll always be at the mercy of the Inner Planets. And yeah, Mars is very wealthy. Wealthier than the UN in some ways, and magnitudes wealthier than the belt, given belters don't really own or control the resources of the belt, they're the workforce that earns profits for the UN/Mars/Corps controlling those resources. All the risk, only a faint shred of reward.

Loving your reactions and analysis so far to this by the way. I'm currently catching up on your Outlander reactions and this. :)

You're right, Imon. Resources are abundant, and enough to go around. It's just under capitalism, they are stolen and hoarded away from working class. And yes, oppression will continue far into the future, maybe just like how this series portrays, if we don't abolish it (capitalism). Greed is actually not an inherent part of humans, it's created. Sometimes by a temporary shortage of resources, but most certainly perpetuated by a rich ruling class, who are so far removed from their fellow humans, who want to keep it that way.

Definitely another reason (among many) why I consider this show to be the best thing I've ever watched. This series hits hard with how reality is and moves the scene into the future. Does an amazing job of placing the same things we deal with now into a situation across the entire solar system via the three major groups and the tensions, wrongs, feelings towards one another! Been great watching your reactions as I try to catch up to where you're currently at!

In 2016 in Vietnam, we would pay 80 cents for a delicious bowl of pho.

You're doing a good job on picking up a lot of stuff here. Here's some other important stuff from the episodes. The name of their new ship, the Rocinante is the name of Don Quixote's horse in the famous book Don Quixote. The kid who was mining the rock with his uncle is named Diogo, he was the street kid who Miller almost arrested in the 2nd episode. Diogo was stealing sewer water in episode 2. Anderson Dawes mentioned to Joe Miller why so many Belters have neck tattoos. Dawes shows the burns around his own neck and said the cheap crappy space suits they used burned their necks. Now younger belters get neck tattoos on their neck collar to reference or honor what their parents and grandparents went through. Tycho station, the space station the gang are at is really big, it's like a city, it has bars, clubs, restaurants, apartments, hotels. The Tycho Corporation builds space stations, turns asteroids into stations, and builds and fixes ships. As both Chrisjen and Holden mention, Fred Johnson is building a big ship for the Mormons. To explain the confusing scene when uncle Mateo opens his mask in space, well it's not that dangerous if your mask opens for like 5 seconds. If his mask was open to space for say 15-20 seconds he'd go unconscious, and be dead in 60-90 seconds. So what he did was not smart, but somewhat possible.
