The reason why the government was obsessed with sending a guy with her to Russia is because of the hostility of the United States(Capitalism) and the Soviet Union/USRR(communism/socialism.) The USA waged wars in so many countries, destroying communist governments and replacing them with corrupt capitalist government(yay...) Then when the USRR fell at the end of the 80s/early 90s most of the country was taken over by oligarchs(which Putin was part of and eventually overtook & destroying their public systems for capitalist ones) so in a large way the USA is responsible for all the crap going on today(big surprise.) The show gives a good way of showing the bs of how the government was(and is today with this hostility.) This episode was such a great ending to a fantastic show. If Townes had been a spy i would've broken my computer screen because the show would've been a boring, propaganda spy show instead of the fantastic story of trauma and overcoming things with the value of people around you that it was.
