Your conversation at the end about 'we're alone but we're not alone' is so spot on and most people either can't admit that or they are so in their own bubble or circle of relationships/friends that they never realize it until bad things happen to them and then they struggle with that(being alone.) I know so many people who can't stand to be out of relationships for more than a few weeks and they jump into anything they can find cause of loneliness. I'm so happy being 'Alone' and it took until my 30s to realize that. I had so many family gatherings, relationship and friendships etc growing up as a kid and into my 20s that I don't feel I need that anymore. If things come into my life then so be it but I love my solitude. There are only a few days(if that) a year that I feel 'lonely' and it's mostly "man, it would be nice to share this thing that I love with someone" but that feeling usually goes away the next day(if not sooner.) The way I see it is exactly how you described, we are alone but we are not. As long as I'm able to converse with people, share things either online or with people IRL and build solidarity with others I'm never truly "alone."

Chess is what motivated her after being put in a bad situation and then later down the line she got addicted to winning and being the best and essentially letting chess consume her. Leaving no room for love, fun or any of the sort. Now with beltik I don't she loved him or anything like that. I think it was just as simple as she was lonely and also had no one to talk to chess about when she got home. I do think though she's very oblivious to how her actions are interpreted by other people.
