It is now my third rewatch of this show. I knew I had to go the full reaction route. Its one of my favourite shows. And yeah as already been said this very same show sparked a lot of interest in Chess. Fun fact the person who wrote the script/Idea for this show/movie shopped it around for 10 years. Trying to get it made if I remember right. And it was super successful even though many people said: Who wants to see a show about a chessplayer?

To answer your question about chess's popularity: it has become more popular in very recent times, partially because of this show and partially because of lockdown. A bunch of high level chess players started streaming chess, popular streamers started getting into it as well so it ended up becoming very popular for a time and it has retained a lot of that popularity still.
And chess was more popular during the era this show is set in, but you'll find out about why this was the case.

Marielle Heller, the actress who plays Alma (the adoptive mother) is also a talented director!
Funny how you opened by talking about your period and then bam, she has her first period.
