A few notes (one: loved this reaction!). 1. Regarding boys: I assume they all are hardwired to try to kill themselves until their mid-twenties and their parents have the monumental task of making sure they fail. 2. Regarding confession: I agree with your comment that it's not always ideal. In an ideal world, the priest is meant to be a therapist of sorts. You're meant to be "unburdening" yourself to them and they're meant to give you a path of absolution that you can easily perform. It's surrounding the idea that you can't help but sin and, if you're a good person, you feel bad about the sins you invariably commit. It's not meant to be judgement or punishment...but absolution. Again, I AGREE that it's not always ideal. But that's how it's SUPPOSED to work. :) 3. Regarding ritual: It's comforting. That's about it. Life is unpredictable and dangerous, and there is evil there that you have no control over. Ritual is... safe, predictable, and (working as it should) harmless. It can be uplifting and peaceful to participate in any ritual where you don't have to expend mental energy to do so. Think almost like meditation. Again, love love the reaction and I only comment to inform from the perspective of someone raised Catholic. :)

2022-03-18 15:38:43 +0000 UTCThis was interesting. I grew up in the church although a Pentecostal church. I also live in the south. It's weird seeing all of the Catholic worship. Cant help being somewhat triggered by some of the stuff I see because of my own issues with religion. I'm also someone who has not only been in the church but served in every capacity from driving the church van, ushering, to preaching sermons.

My mom told me not to ride the bike that same morning because it wasn't safe and sure enough the front wheel came right off. She still blames herself which is really sad and it clearly was completely my fault.

I never would have thought a Mormon kid, grew up to be agnostic, watched 1 specific scene from Midnight Mass, and is now more faithful(not religious) than I have ever been, and jam out to Nearer My God To Thee.
