Ah, interesting. Thank you for the correction.

Kelly Parks

I love when you guys go down the religion rabbit hole. I'm an agnostic person (like really just couldn't care less about it) who lives down in Knoxville, TN. Growing up every wednesday & sundays were spent at church. For 10 years I worked at said church in the sports department. Also was a youth leader for about 6 years for a group of guys from their 2nd grade until they were almost finished with 8th grade until I just left because I just stopped "believing" (and realized the hypocrisy in leading kids while not believing in what they did). My overall take away has been that maybe it might make people's live better but it's just not worth it to engage. As long as I can atleast slowly make people around me who do have the old school christian view more comfortable with the progression in how the world should treat the LBTGQ+ community then i'm doing my part. Plus finding a girlfriend who has a same world view as me has been helpful in that. Love you guys and can't wait for more.

Johny Belcastro Jr

I have no opinion on this conversation you guys are having, However on foot binding Kelly you really should look it up before saying women chose to do foot binding, it was done by the fathers unto their daughters at the age of 9 sometimes younger. Foot binding was practiced over a thousand years ago and did not stop until maybe 60 years ago and women had no choice over doing it or not, men thought it was attractive so men did it to their daughters. Sometimes it better not talk about something as if you have an idea what it's about because when you don't it makes you look like a fool :). Have a good one. mate.

Wicked

Anyone who has a "collective expectation that these things will not be done" is hopelessly naïve. Foot (not food) binding, which you blamed on men (how is that okay?) isn't something I "blamed" on anyone. I pointed out that the misguided practice was something women chose to do because they thought it made them prettier. Why does that make you uncomfortable? Is it because breast implants are a choice some women make because they believe it makes them more attractive? Also, what cultures where laugh at the idea that boobs are sexy? Oh, you won't be able to tell me because you ran away...I mean "left". Bye.

Kelly Parks

Okay. I'm going to try this one more but I'm going to leave it after this. Rudeness, Theft, Murder. Those are all things that would fall under 'animal instinct' but societally we have agreed to hold people accountable for their actions. We have a collective expectation that these things will not be done. So if we have normalized those things being unfair and disrespectful to another persons autonomy why can't we do that with sexualization? Food binding: Kinda weird that you immediately throw off blame on women there but okay. Anyway foot binding was something that was, again, societally enforced as erotic. Similar to our current collective unconscious having normalized breast implants because our focus on sexualizing breasts. Final note, there are some cultures that find the sexualization of breasts laughable, so not really universal is it?

Nate Judge

Sure but there's a difference between knowing you're hoping for something you can't affect and praying and then going "God heard my prayers and if it doesn't happen it's because he chose not to". As well as that religion is just so specific and it's almost arrogant in a way to think that your god just happens to be the one true one and all the other religions in the world happen to be false lmao

tom

So we all need to be nudists? That's no where near as much fun as people who haven't tried it think it is.

Kelly Parks

It is left over from nature. You can see that because -- with some variations -- what men and women find physically attractive about each other is universal, across very different cultures that never had contact with each other. That's nature. We are just another animal, after all.

Kelly Parks

And all I did was disagree.

Kelly Parks

Why should you need to ask someone not to be rude? Or not to steal? Or not to murder? I'm not sure what magical world you're imagining but it sure isn't this one. And the tiny foot thing wasn't because men thought it was sexy. It was because women thought it made them look pretty.

Kelly Parks

So I've been quiet awhile but I wanted to thank you for the conversation after the show. You both have made such important points and it really is unfortunate that humanity feels such a need to sexualize everything.

Teyon Alexander

All people pray for something without a basis, whether or not its to a god is irrelevant. that's why its called faith. Kids will wake up every winter morning hoping for a snow day. Religious people will hope someone is watching over their loved ones and protecting them. I wish a meteor would hit my place of work every time I walk out my door. Because at the end of the day, none of it is real, even scientific evidence is real until it isn't. It's all just a construct humans have created to instill order in a universe that makes no sense.

Argo2Unitard

Yep, I feel like if done well religion can be very beneficial for society by giving a lot of people motivation for life and to be kind and of course that sense of community. But also... it's just not real lol, so it's like am I gonna force myself to believe in something for its utilitarian benefit even though I know better

tom

I can really relate to realizing how people go to church to feel like a part of a community and share a belief which can be very good for some people but it was actually kind of driving me crazy the older I got. Like this stuff doesn’t make any sense!

Magdiel León

No, the point is it's pretty clearly possible to not sexualize bodies so much. Nudists for example are so used to being around naked bodies that mere nudity isn't going to arouse them, it depends on the context. The reason this is relevant is because if you encourage big breasts for example being inherently sexual then it causes a lot of problems for women. I know someone who has told me that growing up she was sexualized when she was waayyyy too young just because she had bigger boobs and people treated her as more mature. As well as that, a lot of people would see her as showing off too much cleavage even if you could see literally no skin. The whole reason that happens in the first place is because 1 women are inherently sexualized more, like some people just see women as a sex object, and 2 this causes things like bigger breasts being sexualized. No one is saying we need to brainwash society and tell people to not find breasts attractive lmao, but these conversations are important to realize how biased a lot of perceptions society has which can cause unfair obstacles for people just trying to live their life

tom

I like Annie but she is a manipulator so she was intentionally using her body and femininity.

Viola Farlocco

I feel as if you two are arguing different points. Do women have the right to demand that they not be objectified? Yes. Should men start being more accountable for their actions in regards to objectification and misogyny? Yes. Has media been used to over-sexualize women to sell stuff? Yes. However, on the other side, people's instincts can't be ignored. It's most likely not left over from the animal kingdom or whatever, but he environment you grew up in has a heavy influence on how your mind immediately reacts to certain things. People are people, and when they see someone they think is attractive doing things they find attractive, the immediate instinct is to stare, no matter the gender or sexuality (except I guess ace or any other similar ones)

Argo2Unitard

Who's the one that's assuming anything I said was personal? You're only saying it's an assumption because you disagree with my point, lol. All I said is sexuality is not as inherent as you think

tom

It is entirely tossing away agency. Why should someone need to ask to not be objectified? The starting point you're coming from is that people need to ask for the basic respect to be treated with dignity. Do you understand that? That's not exactly a good bar to be setting as the standard for society. This is a hyperbolic example to get the point across. In the tang dynasty(foot binding), If you talked to a dude there would probably have been some that said: I just find tiny feet really sexy it's nature. But from our current societal perspective it's gross and inhuman.

Nate Judge

Nope. Straight Euro Men like big boobs too. Just because they're cooler about it doesn't mean they aren't into it. And by no means is it tossing away agency. I said women have the right to ask men to be more polite about it. But they do not have the right to demand we not feel how we feel, just as men don't have the right to tell women not to feel how they feel.

Kelly Parks

I mean... this is just categorically incorrect. There are many modern cultures that don't sexualize women to the same degree as the USA. They even brought up Europe as an example. Calling it "instinct" is tossing away agency and avoiding accepting that your behavior is created in your mind and it is fully under your control.

Nate Judge

1. Don't make assumptions about total strangers on the internet. It makes you look foolish. 2. Nature explains who we are, just like any other animal.

Kelly Parks

1. Sexuality is way more socially enforced than you seem to realize 2. That's an appeal to nature

tom

You're not "trained". It's instinct. People always forget that we're as much a part of the animal kingdom as any other animal and instincts apply to us too. You have the right to ask men to be more polite about it but big boobs trigger sexual thoughts in us in a way beyond our control. Instinct.

Kelly Parks

so this ep takes place 9 months after the STD fair where Abed said "if you're going to have sex don't use condoms"

Hunter2

As has been established, Shirley is a shit stirrer.

Kelly Parks

Good job noticing the Abed side story. Most don't.

Kelly Parks

This whole season is great, but the first half is pretty much banger after banger. Really excited for 4 and 6. Lmao, I was about to be upset about Abi backing down on cults. But Imon was like: Nah, we're doin this. It's all cults. I think it's important to keep in mind that a lot of how men behave towards women is built in by society and how we reinforce toxic masculinity. I recently had to look at this from the opposite perspective at work recently. I had the very uncommon scenario of a young girl that was a sexual harasser. Sending unsolicited nudes/stalking the boys her age from work. But my first thought was: This is super fucked up, this poor emotionally abused child. I really don't think about that stuff with empathy when I see men doing it.

Foaming Clean

The origin story of the pregnant woman and her partner can be seen all the way back in a S1 episode. Look behind Jeff on the right: https://youtu.be/oLPJgdgCqKY?t=7 The ironic part is Abed's miscommunicated announcement is why they didn't use protection so him helping them in this episode is probably him making it up to them lol Community has a lot of subtle things they plan over time, there's a lot more details I can't wait to mention when they finally pay off
