To this day I can't stand those kids. Kudos to those actors for doing a good job of playing bratty, entitled little snots and making us all hate them so much.
I haven't seen any of them around in other shows or movies too much. Wondering if they did such a good job playing those roles that even casting directors are just like, "oh, you're those 'Community' kids? Yeah, you're blacklisted forever." /ˢ

At one point, in one of his later seasons, Chevy did let it be known just how much he hated how racist the writers were writing Pierce though. And he did it in typical, explosive Chevy Chase fashion on set.

Shirley: Its called respect and no one ever game me didley.
Pierce: Except me. I respect you more than anyone else in the group
Shirley: Which is why pantsed me?
Pierce: Well you see that was right
Shirley: oh for heavens sake, you are an arrogant self righteous ass
Pierce: And you are a strong dignified woman who's raising a family. A bigger accomplishment than anybody in that room
and nobody can strip you of that. Not even me.
Shirley: You really believe that?
Pierce: Yes
Shirley: And that's why you think pantsing me wasn't wrong?
Pierce: It wasn't.
Basically, Pierce is saying that he respects her so much that whatever gets done to her doesn't compare or take away she has accomplished. I think he sees it as punching up in a sense.
Obviously, its wrong because no matter what level you are at or where you are in life people can feel insecure and vulnerable.

Tom, I'd agree with ur use of the worse conventional.
The characters need to remain who they are, because sitcom, so growth is less of a slow build to a better person, and more about specific moments of lucidity... Moments where the characters address, notice, or get called out for something. Unfortunately due to the nature of the show, those moments rarely change a character completely... But may help them to be overall better in more nuanced ways (see season 3 finale).
That being said, Pierce in particular, and his whole persona is most certainly addressed greatly in season 2... In several episodes. But as Imon and Abbi have mentioned, addressing something is not the same as having a resolution to it.

The funny thing about the teenagers is whether its literal teenagers or adult children, learning to no-sell that is pretty key. What's the worst that's gonna happen of ignoring that vs what's the best that's gonna happen of engaging with that? Arguing with teenage or not-so-teenage trolls is embarassing even on youtube; don't degrade yourself lol.

Are they? I feel like it's the opposite. The characters don't really undergo conventional development, in S1 it's set up but in S2 and 3 (and 5 and 6) they mostly just go in the natural direction the actors' chemistry takes it

A lot of the problems surrounding Pierce and his behavior are addressed and acknowledged throughout season 2. Most of Pierce’s character is written around Chevy Chase himself, who is notoriously difficult to work with (especially when it comes to Dan Harmon).

Troy and Abed didn’t apologise (on screen anyway, from what I remember) nor did they take it the way Shirley did - but Pierce probably doesn’t understand that he simply doesn’t have the same kind of friendship with Shirley as Abed and Troy have with each other, or the fact that Shirley’s personality type would not tolerate that as a joke in the first place

I think Pierce was just trying to fit in with the younger people in the group and get in on Abed’s “joke”. When Abed does something inappropriate it’s usually laughed off and forgiven as him being weird and quirky. Pierce’s problem is he’s tone deaf and can’t read the room. I think its a case of monkey see monkey do and from his perspective it wasn’t that he pantsed Shirley, he just wanted to pants anyone to join in on the fun and it just >happened< to be Shirley
