Hanma in the present seems like he's hardcore kisaki's lapdog. Like his demeanor and the way he didn't really address takemichi shows that he doesn't do anything outside of what he was told because yeah he could've killed him right then and there. Also it could be that both of them dying in a car accident would be harder to track back to kisaki as opposed to them being shot or stabbed or something.

Whenever he goes back to the present and stuff has changed; neither of them know what's changed without looking it up. That's my understanding of the time travel, at least
