I'm no expert but I've seen videos from people it and it's like the identities live their own lives separate from the main identity but they're still aware of their other identities.

S3 has a strong start, and overall it's a lot faster paced so I think you'll be more satisfied. and you're right that we have all these different characters with their own motives, which is cool. to spread the word of the cinematography of this show once more, the scene where Elliot and Darlene walk into that hacker tournament place is a reaaally long take, I think that shot lasts for like 3 minutes. impressive stuff and you're about to see more of that this season
