Yeah, I honestly think they just did it because prison looks visually ugly. The gothic tone worked a lot better for what they were going for

This twist was telegraphed since the start of the season: That big red light is always there in the scenes where he's talking with anyone from outside the prison. When him and Leon eat at the diner, you can see everyone is in a line getting their food on trays.

The important piece of information is that Mr. Robot was secretly communicating with the Dark Army the entire time to organize their release - so all of his combativeness with Elliot was really to keep him distracted so that he didn't get into trouble elsewhere in the prison.

His journal is available to buy, and tells a whole story in between seasons with him and Leon and Carla, and also shows what everything was like from the prison perspective. It's very good.

SPOILERS BELOW
Actually 2x8 is the one where Elliot isn't in the episode at all. It's a ballsy move, they have the episode after the big twist basically ignoring it, but I personally respect the decision and it's one of my favourite episodes of the season

It will be revealed how he ended up in prison in the next episode, I believe, but if you watch the season 1 finale carefully there is one scene in there that is a clue for why.
