2021-08-14 22:51:09 +0000 UTCThis twist was telegraphed since the start of the season: That big red light is always there in the scenes where he's talking with anyone from outside the prison. When him and Leon eat at the diner, you can see everyone is in a line getting their food on trays.

2021-08-14 22:50:57 +0000 UTCThe important piece of information is that Mr. Robot was secretly communicating with the Dark Army the entire time to organize their release - so all of his combativeness with Elliot was really to keep him distracted so that he didn't get into trouble elsewhere in the prison.
