2021-07-10 20:19:33 +0000 UTCi agree with imon a lot. as someone who’s dealt with abuse and i’ve been going to a lot of therapy recently i’ve just had this realisation that damn why are so many of these skills that is taught to me in therapy not taught to everyone as kids?? if i had known these from a young age it would’ve saved me a lot of suffering and probably the suffering of those around me. knowing how to love others and yourself healthily is such an essential skill that so many of us aren’t taught and tbh that’s such a big part of why we have wars, abuse etc. i think bojack really accurately depicts the way trauma cycles down in families and the easy way to stop that is to get treated and figure your shit out basically before you pass it down. so having parents be taught healthy parenting skills before they have kids or kids being taught these skills at school etc. seems so reasonable but it’s still not done

2021-07-09 03:24:12 +0000 UTCi would say the main theme of this whole season is holding yourself accountable and taking responsibility and i think in this episode the writers and creators of the show address the fact that when bojack the show aired a certain group of viewers found bojack’s character relatable and managed to excuse their own shitty behaviour using him. i think in a meta way they’re saying that that’s not the point. bojack is a victim but he still needs to be held accountable in the same way the character of philbert does.

Lots of how Diane talks about Philbert and her talks with BoJack this season are the writers of the show publicly airing their feelings on the show’s reception with a certain crowd that had become vocal about Bojack making them feel okay about themselves because they act like Bojack. So BoJack victimizing himself is largely them throwing shade at this segment of the audience: trying to say you’re missing the point. And also their struggles with giving them comfort by making Bojack.
