I believe Edward is hellbent on not being like his father in the sense of sending men to battle simply out of glory and ambition. However he doesn’t have the skills or guidance to do so. He is wanting to fulfill a role very differently so like any young person he is going to have to learn from his mistakes.

2021-04-30 00:57:53 +0000 UTCI love this show. It certainly is among the most underrated shows out there. However the writing in season 4 has taken a dip. It is still a good season, but the writing is not so strong like in previous seasons. It is also the season i feel has strayed more from the story of the books, and that may be one of the reasons why it feels weaker. Uhtred is waaay too saintly in the show, which bothers me. Especially in season 4 they make a very deliberate effort of presenting Uhtred doing everything right (apart from episode 2, which again is less of a mess up than it was in the books). As season 4 moves on you'll see more and more characters acting very strangely. Aethelred's sudden change of heart after being close to death (i laughed when he said to Aethelflaed, "i was younger and more foolish" - dude, you were literally like that half a day ago...), after being almost comically evil up till now, Edward's flip flopping all over the place... and also Aethelflaed's naivety, which is a faaaaar cry of her character in the books. Anyway, you'll notice more as the season progresses.
