@BetheSOUL I googled it, first result from Statista, who use a database kept by Mother Jones as a source(not exactly a site that would be biased in favor of white people):
Mass shootings between 1982 and April 2021, by race of shooter :
54% White
17% Black
8% Latino
7% Asian
4% Other
2% Native American
8% Unknown/Unclear
Since whites make up a little over 60% of the population now, they'd be slightly underrepresented, though if you account for the fact that they made up over 80% of he population in 1982 when the survey' started they'd be more underrepresented. Even if you assume that every 'unknown' case was a white person, they'd still be underrepresented.
From the study, "Broadly speaking, the racial distribution of mass shootings mirrors the racial distribution of the U.S. population as a whole. While a superficial comparison of the statistics seems to suggest African American shooters are over-represented and Latino shooters underrepresented, the fact that the shooter’s race is unclear in around five percent of cases, along with the different time frames over which these statistics are calculated means no such conclusions should be drawn. Conversely, looking at the mass shootings in the United States by gender clearly demonstrates that the majority of mass shootings are carried out by men."
I can narrow the scope down to just the last 5 years if you want but then the percentage that are white drops down to ~43%.

This discussion is about mass shootings, what could be done about it, what must be done about it, and what SHOULD be done about it. My opinion about racially targeted laws is my own and exclusive to this type of crime based on the factors around it. For other crimes, other factors are in play. Oh, and the information on mass shootings demographics are on google, there's really not much of a dispute across every database. The ones you described are outliers, don't try to use the availability heuristic on me.

@BetheSOUL Why not have racially targeted laws for every group that's overrepresented in a crime then? Black people are overrepresented in many violent crimes, including gun crimes that kill far more than die in mass shootings every year, so by your logic why not have extra strict background checks there? Jews are overrepresented in white collar financial crimes, would you like to put some kind of arm bands or patches on them so people know to be extra careful in their business dealings, or perhaps make it harder to gain professional licenses? I'm 100% against all racially targeted laws myself on moral principle.
And can I get some data on whites being overrepresented in mass shootings? What's your definition of what constitutes a mass shooting, and what's your source for whites being overrepresented? I can think of at least two non-white mass shooters in the last month, one of which targeted white people exclusively, killing ten. Another who shoot four people in a housing complex in California, including a nine year old that died in his mother's arms. That one wasn't reported much outside of local news though.

Lol that's because several states don't require a license in the first place. I really don't understand why you can't use Google. Here: https://www.cheatsheet.com/culture/states-loosest-gun-laws.html/. And car accidents are not indicators that the written tests don't work. To make that claim you'd have to juxtapose a country's statistics with those of another country that doesn't have written tests.

If you dont mind can you state the states? Im actually tryin to research this and find where it say "license dealers" do not have to abide by a federal background check. With all the car accidents in this country, i dont think that written test will do anything unfortunately. This is tough. the bigger picture has to start with the individual. Improving quality of life helps more in my opinion.

In many states there are no background checks WHATSOEVER. So let's start with the standard criminal background check, complete with fingerprints. Also, I would push for mandatory safety course and a written exam, much like the ones required for operating a car.

Only in circumstances like this one, where whites are INCONTROVERTIBLY overrepresented.

I see this is getting way too personal for some ppl here so ill just stop. But remember this is why the convo on guns goes nowhere. Noone wants to listen to anyone.

@Darrach Its a matter of opinion brodie. I just want ppl to see all sides. Crowder is obviously not stupid. Just because you disagree with something doesn't make the other person not "smart".

If Steven Crowder videos agree with your position, maybe your position isn’t very smart.

@BetheSoul you mind being more specific though when you say we need "much stricter background checks" what other restrictions would you add that already doesn't exist? Honest question because i for one "hate" when ppl make obvious general statements like that. Because it goes nowhere. I would really recommend watching "Change my Mind" topic gun control on youtube. Its gives another perspective on guns. Ppl will always be the problem in my eyes. In my opinion its never the gun we should address first. Thats just me though.

@BetheSOUL Are you in favor of racially targeted laws based on crime statistics in any other circumstances or only in this one instance where whites are allegedly overrepresented?

I just wanna comment on the mental health thing reactor said. I really hate when people say it's a mental health thing. Maybe for some but overall I don't think so. Like you said there are evil people in this world and those are the people who wake up in morning fully sane and together and decide they wanna shoot up a mall or church or school out of hate and anger.
Regardless I think we all can agree that something needs to be done. Much stricter background checks for one, but I know if someone really wants a gun there are back way channels to get one unfortunately.

@cains i also see what youre saying but the "also performed by people with black/brown hair so let's make it stricter for those hair colors as well while we're at it, it'd make just as much sense, lol" imo is not a good argument as this is def a separate idea. hair color or whatever other funny example you mention doesnt have any sort of historical and impactful systemic problem that we still see today in the US (well, maybe ppl with red hair might disagree since ppl assume they no souls or whatever :p). sometimes ppl do just latch onto race and gender too quickly/easily but those topics are definitely intertwined with many issues such as gun violence, policing, etc bc of the conscious and unconscious biases ppl have in their day to day life and thus they should at least be discussed when contextualizing the numbers

@reactorhero i see what youre saying about the small percentage, but that's not a great metric. the key is that the overall number of mass shootings and overall gun violence in the US is too high despite how big the denominator is (the overall number of gun owners), and that's why legislation should be put in place to help make that decrease (sorry i work with data so i always get picky when ppl use counts vs percentages vs averages lol)

2021-04-15 19:49:47 +0000 UTC
Yea let's take things away from people based on their race and sex, that could never go wrong. No matter the issue, both sides in the US always seem to find a way to make it about race and sex. You know the vast majority of gun violence is also performed by people with black/brown hair so let's make it stricter for those hair colors as well while we're at it, it'd make just as much sense, lol.
People are justly treated differently based on their intent and chosen actions, not on their hair color, skin color, sex, or any other shallow thing like this. The problem is mental health like the other guy said, and the only reason you should ever make anything stricter for a person is if they have shown that they individually have questionable intent or actions. Being white or black does not show anything about you as a person other than the frequency of light that bounces off your skin, and you shouldn't be treated differently in any way based on it for that reason -- including any kind of stricter check by a government that will inevitably be abused.

I get your logic and i know you mean well when saying ban assault rifles, but why stop there? Why not ban pistols, why not ban guns over all., if the point is to stop gun deaths, why have any in the first place? This is why i believe that logic is wrong. we have to deal with the root of the issue. Mental health.
ReactorHero
2021-04-15 14:06:18 +0000 UTC
banning things will not work sadly because evil ppl will always exist in this world. I own guns, i actually own assault rifles( which i had to go threw several background checks to obtain), and you don't see me shooting up places. if we were to count all the individuals who have guns and all the gun shootings we see in America, the data wont even show more than 1% because the overwhelming majority are not mass shooters obviously. Ppl will regret all this ban talk when you have to protect something or someone you really love. Its more about mental health. Back in the old days Blacks( ppl like me) were not allowed to own guns let alone property so this issue hits me differently. I love this show but i believe it is bias and favors the leftist opinion on social and political issues.

2021-04-15 14:02:19 +0000 UTC
It would honestly make a lot of sense to ban assault rifles and give strict background checks on men. Ideally it would be WHITE men, since they're the mass shooters 90% of the time, but of course that would never fly, so just make it very hard for men to own guns.

I wonder how many people got the pumped up kicks joke. Anyways I really appreciate the title of this episode. When it comes to gun violence and all these mass shootings nothing will ever be done. I saw a flowchart that describes this perfectly.
Mass shooting happens>thoughts and prayers>discussions about gun violence>nothing changes> people forget and then repeat when it happens again. I don't think guns should necessarily be taken away but at this point no in america can be trusted to have one but it's like what do you do? There's no 100% way to tell who will shoot a place up but we gotta come up with something because we can't just give our thoughts and prayers, complain that something needs to be done and then the government does shit all about it.

Dianne and Mr. Peanutbutter here remind me of George and Kellyanne Conway (the orange president's campaign manager), since they were technically political enemies but apparently had a good marriage, which is funny because this came out years before that drama developed

I feel you on the parents thing. My dad and his wife... they've really just lost it in the last 4 years. It's very hard to just let them be two human adults that are in my life--who happen to be dumb af, instead of wanting a relationship.
Mom on the other hand has been there to show me that working through your shit and introspection is the way to live.

Welcome to the Mom season! I believe you asked for it earlier. Every season gets one "Fuck" that changes a relationship in the show. In this episode Bojack just dropped it; to Hollyhock's face, but its meant for his mother and the change is obvious.
Its a sad crossroad when you have to become more of the parent taking care of your parent; especially when like in cases such as Bojack's where you have resentments based on past experiences and lack closure. The past issues have faded to time unresolved and now your tested to move past it and step up to be the a better person for them then you may feel they were for you. To be the kind of guardian you wanted.
I'm glad Diane and PB have found a work / life / politics balance. The way the show addresses both gun control and women's safety in this episode was thought provoking. Thoughts and prayers. Tragedies happen but they also provide protection and a feeling of safety.
Love the idea for the segment. Might need a special 420 special for just vibeing out/ Could be an unofficial podcast debut in a way. Or at least a special.

I love you two (in that I get to listen to you have great conversations because of this show) and I don't know how early you film these but given recent events I just want to say I hope you're both doing alright. Everything is infuriating, and this episode captured that.
