Damnatio seems like a corrupt guy, but he only cares the future and safety of the Clover Kingdom. Damnatio knows the World Devil manipulated the elves and magic knights, but only certain magic knights that were in the Shadow Palace and us the audience knows that. Alot of innocent citizens, and nobles were killed which must have justice. So with the Word Devil dead, Asta with his devil in the grimoire is the perfect scapegoat. Instead of the magic knights that were taken over by the elves being excuted. Leaving the Clover Kingdom defenseless and open to Invasion by the other Kingdoms, especially with the Wizard King Julius doesn't have his magic anymore
