In a previous episode, Emilia said that he came to the forest to make her join the Royal Selection. He told her if she joined he could possibly come up with a way to save the frozen people. You'll learn more about that time by watching the Memory Snow OVA. I won't say much about the Black Serpent but no, it did not live in the forest naturally and came the same time Pandora did. Also the letters that Emilia touched in the end means "I love you."

And he said all of this while crying This hits harder after this episode. Rewatching season 1 is gonna be crazy knowing the things roswaal has done, why emilia acts the way she does, guese before going crazy, etc. Great reaction hope everything is good and stay safe
