Uhtred & Alfred still the best tag team in England and their strategy at Fearnham allows them to outthink and outmaneuver Bloodhair's army and defeat them. Leading him to flee, not very encouraging for Skade's champion. Though she does have her eye on Uhtred and she already has sown seeds of doom by saying he will need a woman soon. This augur is all too real as poor Uhtred discovers when he returns to Winchester that his beloved wife Gisela has died in childbirth. Gisela was a kind, benevolent soul who really did bring out the best in Uhtred and has given him three children. Her death tragic as it is was not uncommon at this time, but the bad timing and Skade's words only going to deepen Uhtred's belief that he maybe responsible for her death. England is in crisis, the rise of the brutal Dane Earl Bloodhair and his ruthless, sadistic sorceress Skade is causing all manner of mayhem. Skade is a character that is almost universally disliked, arrogance, cruelty and manipulation distilled into a hot but terrible figure. Alfred is more frail and sickly as he has aged and everyone knows this. His victories and shrewd political acumen has made everyone think twice about crossing him. Unfortunately as he draws ever close to death, his many enemies and rivals are circling. Bloodhair and Skade looking to kill the dying king. Aethelred no doubt is looking to expand after Alfred kicks the bucket and get revenge on his wife Aethelflaed for diminishing him.
