the avatar cycle follows the order wan learned the elements it's explained in season one ep 2 of atla and that's why it was a big deal when aang tried to learn fire out of order. the avatar is born as soon as the previous dies each nation has a ritual to find the avatar and at the age of 16 they are told and start mastering the other 3 elements which i found wild the world is just wilding for 16 years lol

2021-03-11 05:51:12 +0000 UTCNow when going back to earlier in the season when Tenzin first reached the Southern Air temple; you'll be able to recognize the glowing statue that Jinora saw in the room of Avatar statues was Wan being surrounded by Rava! It started glowing as Korra opened the Southern Portal. It's great those sages saved a whole herd of Sky Bison; which explains why there are still more after we thought Appa was the last one. Korra's one is pretty cute, it has a broken off right horn.

Considering both spirit portals are in the north and south, you can assume that it's something that's been passed down from generation to generation. Also I love how this flashback was animated. The art style is beautiful.
