"It takes a long time to realize how truly miserable you are, and even longer to see that it doesn't have to be that way."
Diane tells Cuddly Whiskers how people were worried about him and it was selfish for him to go away like he did. This is what she's dealing with after leaving and hurting Mr. Peanutbutter.
His answer to her is that sometimes you have to take responsibility for your own happiness and that he refuses to feel bad for it.

This was definitely more of a diane and mr peanut butter episode. It just sounds like the marriage to pb isn't really working out for her anymore and pb doesn't really have patience for diane anymore. It's all going downhill.

I suppose I think of this mostly as a Diane episode. Again still struggling with what her life is vs what she wants. When the novelty of the murder mystery comes up she's very excited by it and the prospect of adventure. It's like her own escapist fantasy come to life. She doesn't have to live in the real world with her problems.
I feel like that's why in the end Diane is so sullen after Cuddlywhiskers. I think to Diane, that speech is calling her out--telling her: you have to face the reality of your life. And she knows she's been running from it.
The line "Take responsibility for your own happiness" kind of slaps her in the face. Truly taking responsibility is also examining what makes you unhappy and accepting it, even if that's not what you think you want, sometimes it's just reality.

I took the speech as a pretty straightforward commentary on materialism/wanting to be idolized and how meaningless it can be. How if you get that thing you want that won't always make you happy so if you take away all of those ambitions you can start to find ways to just be happy with yourself. Like you said responsibility has to play a part but there is definitely some truth there I think.
