I don't know this for fact but I feel the similarity suggests that they may have originated from the same place before the story spread out and got twisted as things do when conveyed solely by word of mouth.

Clearly shenanigans are going on as it's no coincidence that Erik & Siegfrid return to England around the same time that Aethelwold comes to see Uhtred about this prophecy. With the brothers' army at Lunden and Mercia & Wessex about to be joined in marriage things are going to heat up real quickly. Thanks for the reaction ladies as always and have a lovely day, peace.

2020-12-18 12:54:26 +0000 UTCLuckily for Alfred, Aethelwold as we see is not suited at all to be king so Aethelred passed him over in favor of his brother. Aethelwold in history & the show was not happy about this and considered Alfred a usurper to his rightful place as King of Wessex. So it makes sense that Aethelwold would try to sway Uhtred to his side by playing on his desires. That they both are dispossessed nobles who have been wronged by Alfred and that their right to rule is not only by blood but by divine blessing as the "ghost" Bjorn proclaims Uhtred to become King of Mercia.

However given the tumultuous times they lived in this rarely happened as most king's died without heirs or their heirs died before they could become king. The House of Ecbert, Alfred's family was unique in that it was a successful dynasty of West Saxon Kings, something not done in nearly 2 centuries. Ecbert passed the crown to Aethelwulf, he passed it onto his 5 sons Aethelred, Aethelberht, Aethelbald, Athelstan & of course Alfred. Alfred was the youngest of Aethelwulf's sons and it's very likely that he would have followed in his brothers' footsteps but Aethelred had a son who was of age to succeed his father, Aethelwold.
