Chuck WAS in college away from Jimmy for a time, probably happens later on than when we see them in the beginning of this episode.

Chuck is a bastard but the end always brings a tear to my eye because he was mentally ill. No one should be forced into a position where they believe suicide is the only way to turn off the pain, what an ending.

He even made the choice not to have his appointment with Dr. Cruz that day, when he needed her most.

Exactly. After those hurtful words to Jimmy, he essentially lost everything. His career, his wife, his friendship with Howard. There was nothing left for him. As much of an asshole Chuck is, and as much as much of this is self inflicted.. he didnt deserve that kind of death.

Chuck was trying too hard to get better as fast as possible, and Dr. Cruz warned him that is a detrimental approach, because the relapse can be 10 times worse. And then I feel the triggering event was his last words to Jimmy ("you never mattered all that much to me") that he didn't truly mean and said just to be hurtful. I don't think he killed himself to help others, it was his mental condition on overdrive. The pain was too much and he wanted it to stop. Makes me think of akathisia (which I've experienced and wouldn't wish on anyone) and that untreated sufferers of akathisia all ultimately commit suicide.
