You haven't watched and not understanding Subaru's suffering till this point at all if you feel fully like that. Go suffer like him and then try staying healthy mentally. Another point is Subaru has no experience in love, so him behaving like he is even more true to his character. Well still it's Subaru's blame in this episode, but saying shit about him without understanding why he is behaving like that is just sad...

Subaru is an ultra simplord in this episode because he learn a valuble and harsh lesson...doing thing for pretty girls just because they are pretty is a dumb thing to do. Do not expect anything from a pretty girl you have simped for because you have simped, if your going to do something do it because you wanted too and nothing more. Good deeds are seldom rewarded and the act of doing something for others does not indebt them to you if they did not ask you to do it, particularly if they don't know you did it because they couldn't. Hahahahahahahhahahahahhahahahahahha (had to edit because I forgot the laugh).

I love that everyone has different takes on this episode and the last scene. Was it a dick move to start talking about how much she owes him? Yeah, the animation of his face shows how ugly those emotions are. But I understand why he would feel that way. He's literally died several times for these people and especially for Emilia. And he feels and carry emotional scars of every death while those around him would never even remember theirs. Emilia has done the bare minimum and has been nice towards Subaru when he was struggling and in this world, I would fall for her too for that reason alone. She has no obligation to respond to those feelings he has and what she did in this episode is completely justified. But I feel for Subaru. A guy that died willingly in order to save Rem, a girl that tortured and killed him in a different timeline. He worked hard until he started to vomit out of stress just to be on their good side so they wouldn't kill him anymore. Yeah, he would be pretty fucked up by this point. Emilia treated him as an equal from the start and when he decided to save her he made a commitment that he probably shouldn't have. I appreciate everyones views on his mindset and situation though. The complexity here is great! I just think that since we actually know that she and many others would die without him he naturally thinks he can fix anything. The reason for going to the capital is just to make sure that if something were to happen, he could potentially reset and be able to save the day, were it to go south. He doesn't know when the next "checkpoint" is going to be so that is logical thinking. But there are emotions he's developed because of his commitment to keeping her alive. There's supposed to be a payoff for all the suffering he's facing. His fate is somehow connected to Emilia because of his and her "connections" to the Witch, ofcourse he would feel like this is a fairytale where he gets the girl that he sacrificed his life for over, and over again. She challenged that notion and he got pissed, so would I be.

Just two small corrections before i deep dive into that scene. Emilia wasn't saying her past self was amazing, but that the version of her that subaru has in his head is amazing. Also the ending card was the "self-proclaimed knight" which is accurate since he just calls himself a knight in the episode without any experience. Now onto that scene. The problem subaru has is from that first day when he changed that future where she dies, his mind became warped immediately. He realizes he has this revival power and that he can get infinite chances to chance an outcome. That combined with this girl who shows him affection and friendship just ultimately fucks him up. It starts off as a crush that turns into love and he just feels like he has to do any and everything to protect her and help her but at the same time he's being incredibly selfish and just ignoring what she wants. Like clearly emilia is not the type of girl who will be surprised and happy that a guy ignores what she says to be there for him. She wants to know that if she asks something of subaru he can do it. Unfortunately his selfishness and the debt he feels like she owe's him is blinding his judgement. Even if he said to her " I love you and i just want to support you and be there for you" she would probably reject since he realistically hasn't shown her that's the case. I also don't know if she really understands what love is so that could be another obstacle as well. All in all like other people, this episode is what really made me love this show. He's not the typical MC who just gets better and better as the show goes on like gon. He's a dramatic and sometimes annoying MC that is very flawed and you start slowly seeing that every episode

Dune

Rising of the Shield Hero's MC isn't really like that - he doesn't go around thinking he deserves stuff, he just wants equal treatment not special treatment but I hear where you're coming from.

That's kinda the point to Subaru as a character. He is everything that everyone says about him, a narcissistic, selfish borderline incel. Emilia is one of the five most important figures in the country, is a powerful Spirits Artes user, and has a contract with the great spirit of fire, not A fire spirit, THE GREAT spirit of fire. Yet all Subaru sees in Emilia is a Nice Guy stamp card, do enough "Nice Guy" stuff and he is entitled to whatever he wants, like the MC's in other isekai shows. And before it sounds like I have a bias, Subaru is by far my favorite isekai MC. It's his realistic shortcomings that make his character growth all that more interesting and compelling.

I hated these episodes the most. I hate whiny MCs no woman finds that attractive in a man. But what else can you expect from a person who has gone through intense trauma and is still a boy not mature enough to deal with his emotions? In many ways, this first season is the maturation process of Subaru.

I was on subaru's team the entire time. Even if he was too harsh, he spit facts. Emilia doesn't understand that without him, she would be a corpse. Her "goals" of wanting to be ruler for her to achieve what she's looking for (season 2 spoilers so i can't say) would not be possible without subaru. Instead of trying to listen to subaru, she started yelling. Then at the very end, after he gets worked up in a desperate attempt to state his point, she leaves him. Subaru deserved better here.

And yes, it did suck waiting to see what happened next but uh, nothing would have prepared me for it anyway.

Thing is, regardless of everything he's done "for" her - she's under no responsibility to return his affection or even understand his motivation (even if she does or doesn't feel something for him). It was my biggest complaint about this episode: he was trying to convince her to be with him/ appreciate him by saying she owed him that. I didn't appreciate it. Yes, he saved her life and yes he's done that because of how he felt about her but that's not her fault, it's not her job to coddle him. Like Abi said, he could have gone into his actual feelings about her instead of saying she owed him. It was great that she pointed out his mental picture of who she is has little to do with the person she actually is and that she can't read his mind. I also thought it was great that she pointed out to him that the things he's been doing because he thinks he loves her were really just things he was doing for himself. A form of manipulation so that he'd look good in her eyes. It had nothing really to do with her and everything to do with his selfish needs and wants. He was doing all the right things for all the wrong reasons.

This episode is what elevated Re:Zero to my favorite isekai series with Subaru as my favorite isekai MC. What a lot of the more modern Light Novel isekai series tend to do is to provide a power fantasy to their audience using an overpowered and blank slate lawful good personality MC as it's conduit. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, the market is definitely a bit oversaturated with that genre. What Re:Zero does here is lure that type of audience in while very slowly dissecting Subaru as a character revealing how ugly of a person he is, well after a lot of people already self-inserted themselves into the series through Subaru. Subaru is an otaku weeb just like many of us. He watched/read a ton of isekai series where the MC became the new god of the world they got transported/reincarnated in and how everyone there were tripping over themselves to worship them. Subaru expected the same treatment, but the world of Re:Zero is vast with larger than life characters, yet Subaru felt entitled to everyone’s adoration. The series grabs Subaru by the collar, and the viewer, and says it straight up, “You probably suck in real life, and if you got transported to another world, you would probably suck there too. Grow up”.

This is the episode that made me really like this show. I put this on Subaru, he doesn't take Emilia's feeling and wishes into account. He constantly pursues her like shes is a prize to be won instead of a partner to share his life with. He is still very immature and has a lot to learn about being an adult. He thinks like a lot of young men that if they perform these grand gestures that they are owed something whereas real love is doing the little things every day, supporting and lifting up your partner.

It's about to get DARK AF!
