Bending is genetic but also spiritual so calling them mutants is inaccurate. Benders have clear limits on control because if not it wouldn't be much of a show. I think all of the limits and possibilities have been explored by the end of Korra. So if you didn't see it they probably can't do it lol

You haven’t thought deeply enough about the similarities then. Benders are mutants - like magneto in that way - they have mutated in a way that allows them manipulation of the elements. Kitara learned that she could manipulate blood through its water content. Controlling blood as she controls water, she can manipulate a person’s muscles. The heart among them. She could kill you easily. I don’t think it’s solely a matter of control it’s a matter of will. Once you’ve discovered the ability to do a thing - in this case to control a person’s blood or in Tophs case metal- it’s a question of morality as to how far you want to pursue it. A bender creating lighting can disrupt someone’s brain if they’re channeling said lightning while in physical contact with a person’s head. Just like regular old lighting can. It really is quite similar to magneto and other mutants in terms of extent of power, understanding of that power and a will to use it in that way. You don’t need to be the avatar to do these things, you just need to realize it’s possible and then decide to do it. Zuko’s sister, who shoots lightning with ease is a prime example of a character that, if left unchecked, likely would have explored those avenues of what bending lightning can do.

I don't think that correlates well...maybe Aang.
Toph was able to bend metal once she found the impurities in the of earth in the metal (as seen during Guru's speech). Magneto uses magnetism to take out and manipulate metals from the body. Different mechanism completely.
I don't think any lighting wielder or redirector can get that fine of control or seperation. Lighting is made from collision of ice particles in the air which cause separation of charge from electrons. The body uses salts concenteations across membranes to cause a change in voltage. The best they probably could do is just hit you with the lighting they generate in the air.
I have some theories about how each bending power works, but I'll wait to talk about it on here. Esentially though, I think there is a natural limit of control, but the biggest hindrance benders have is their awareness of the composition. Kinda like Full Metal Alchemist. They can manipulate things once they know it is there and/or how is works.

Great reaction as always! If we were to approach things in a dark violent way, there is nothing stopping Toph from metal bending all the metal out of someone’s body or Ang collapsing someone’s lungs through controlling the air within them or Zuko disrupting the electrical impulses of someone’s brain causing seizures. These kids have immense ability to do harm if they so chose. After reading how Magneto pulled all the adamantium out of Wolverine’s body, I rewatched Avatar (I do it often) and things clicked. I realized just how much restraint must be used by the various benders to resist the urge to just outright kill their enemies.

Also; "bloodbending" is kind of like Vlad King's quirk in My Hero Academia (the homeroom teacher of 2A)!

You find out some of the extended airbending techniques in the sequel series, Legend of Korra

One of my most favorite episodes!! Also, if you are curious to know the other specialties of each bending style then The Legend of Korra is for sure gonna be interesting. Hope you'll watch that right after finishing ATLA.
