I think they heard him, but what are they going to do? Their traditions state that the one who wins the Grand Bout will lead the village and he's obviously going to win. Speaking out against the new chief that isn't afraid to kill people isn't a great idea, the only reason Kohaku did anything is because she's the only one capable of blocking him from becoming chief. There's also some harsh truths about primitive living you have to face when you're worrying about the survival of your family and people. You're not going to be in a rush to trade a strong hunter that can protect and feed for decades, for a sickly girl that will die within a year. When you only have ~50 people, that single trade is huge -- Magma alone is likely over 10% of the hunting potential of the entire village. Let's be real, if she was a normal villager instead of the priestess, she would've probably died a long time ago just because they can't support her.
