Even if he's trying to, Jessie never comes across as acting tough to me, unless the "I'm dead inside" vibe is considered tough. I feel like he's constantly left dumbfounded by Walt's ability to keep lying to himself. They have both long ago driven off the cliff, but it's utterly flabbergasting to him that Walt can still lie enough to himself to rationalize his actions. That ability to ignore one's own heinous actions is legitimately monstrous, and Jessie isn't a monster...a lot of things, but not a monster. Killing Gale shook him, and Walt couldn't give a damn, it's all justified because it keeps him alive. It incidentally kept jessie alive as well, but he's not too stupid to realize how precarious a scenario that creates.

I think he just has a habit of trying to compensate for trauma/sadness by acting like he's a tough guy and kind of above it all. He did the same thing when he thought he was responsible for Jane dying ("I'm the bad guy.") Paraphrasing Tyrion Lannister "Wear it like armor and it can never harm you."
