To many significant changes were made in this season for example this episode, i dont want to spoil the canon story but the events of this season confuse and complicate the story, which is why you feel confused about him joining aoigiri

2019-04-07 02:03:31 +0000 UTCThe hint or reason to why Kaneki joined Aogiri was stated during his convo-fight with Ayato. He said it was for "protection" for someone Ayato holds dear. Meaning joining them, Aogiri, as a way to get stronger himself rather than staying in Anteiku and pretty much do nothing and stay weak. To have the means and be able to protect his dear ones.

2019-04-07 01:38:04 +0000 UTCI thought Kaneki discovered why Touka’s brother joined the other group remember Kaneki said Touka’s brother could have killed him but didn’t and that Touka’s brother joined for protection for maybe his sister. It’s like Kaneki joined the top clan to perhaps find out what they are up to maybe going undercover or to protect like Touka’s brother did the ones he cared for. Maybe by joining them they will now leave his friends alone that’s what I got out of it.
