My nature vs nurture reconciliation is that soil (and other local conditions) can produce a certain type of people but then that people can relocated to new environments. And of course people themselves can modify their local environment to an extent. The idea of a people being shaped by but also shaping their environment is one of the reasons I love the idea of the Fremen in Dune so much.

Indo-European religion was not "weaker" than Abrahamic faiths. Rome and the Sassanids after them were just blindsided by cheese strats that hadn't been used on anyone by any cults in world history. Saying Indo-Euro religion was "weaker" than Christianity is like saying Christianity is "weaker" than GAE civic religion. The philosopher Celsus documented much of this in his "On the True Doctrine" which was thankfully recorded for posterity by Origen, who helped save about 3/4ths of Celsus' polemic in his critique of said tract.
