2023-05-21 16:12:47 +0000 UTCThis is a fun movie, I am fully in favor of watching stuff that just appeals to you. I went through a phase where I thought the only things I should be seeing are prestige dramas or critically acclaimed whatever but the whole point of a film is for it to be entertaining or enjoyable or an escape. That gets exhausting and it shouldn’t feel like a job. I used to have a “guilty pleasure” list of movies but I don’t feel guilty about them anymore. This includes the Lost in Space remake from the 90s with Joey from Friends, Clueless, which I’m not supposed to like because I’m a dude (nonsense, it’s a terrific movie), and Outlander (TV Show), which is a hard R rated romance novel that I weep about. Keep on keeping on.

It was an intentional breakout role for Sarah Michelle Gellar, who until this point was really only known for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a MUCH different role. Just an FYI, this film is loosely based on an 18th century French novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses (Dangerous Liaisons). There have been several adaptations of it over the centuries, into plays, books, movies, and TV series. This is one of the more notable ones, though a 1985 play was eventually itself adapted into a 1988 film, Dangerous Liaisons, starring Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Michelle Pfieffer, and Uma Thurman. It was closer to the original novel, set in 18th century France (with some fantastic locations and costumes), and as I recall it was very popular. It may be worth checking out if you're ever interested in a different take on the story.
