Just a brief sidenote, you mentioned Paris and how many romantic films are filmed there, so I want to HIGHLY RECOMMEND the 1939 film NINOTCHKA about a Russian emmisary played by beautiful Swedish actress Greta Garbo, who is wonderful, looking into the goings-on with a mission to Paris. Now honestly I don't think any of the actors who play Russians are Russians (everyone including the Parisians speak English), but it's a beautiful romantic comedy of manners.

I never really think of this movie as being scary but definitely it makes you on edge. You know something bad is going to happen so you're trying to predict what it will be.
I'd recommend movies like:
28 Days Later
The Descent
Zoolander
The Rock
Rocky IV - You finally get your Russian villain and the one many remember.

I'm not super familiar with this movie but I am familiar with the very real crash of TWA flight 800 that inspired the films plane crash scene. There a video on YouTube that someone made editing together scenes from the movie with documentary animation of the real plane crash and it's kinda disturbing how well the video is made.
