Big Hero 6 was not inspired by Iron Giant. Iron Giant came out in 1999, the Big Hero 6 comic series came out in 1998. Also, they don't resemble each other in any way. Character motivations, antagonists, themes and plots are all entirely different and the only match is that the protagonists are both boys. I will avoid pointing out specifics so Dasha doesn't read spoilers, but you should be able to think about them both and see the differences. Ask yourself questions such as 'What relationship does the protagonist have to the titular character? What was the plot that lead to them meeting? What motivated the antagonists? How does the story end? What is the story's theme? What is the moral of the story?'

The Red Scare was in full effect, there had been people like Agent Kent Mansley running Washington, and Sputnik-1 terrified the American public by passing overhead going 'beep beep beep'. Lots of sci-fi movies of the time were based on fear of Communism, and McCarthyism made sure Hollywood was afraid to say otherwise. It wasn't until later that movies started making fun of that paranoia.
