The scene where the Iron Giant saves the two little boys was influenced by an identical scene in the cold war comedy film 'The Russians are Coming! The Russians are Coming!' That movie, like another movie called 'Marooned', went against the normal, scare everyone idea of the Russians being a "Red Menace that will take over" to depicting them as just...people.
